BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Heidi Wissmiller (Chair of Board)

Heidi Wissmiller was the Chief Growth Officer of Rodan + Fields, the leading skincare brand in North America. Under her leadership the brand experienced unprecedented growth of over $1 billion. During Heidi’s tenure R+F’s powerful community of female entrepreneurs grew to over 300,000 with a customer base of over 1.8 million.

Heidi successfully created the vision for and launched R+F Virtual which is the recipient of an Effie Award. She is the co-inventor of 2 patents and was selected as a Salesforce Convention Keynote for “Winning the Digital Experience Race” and an IBM Think Convention keynote for “R+F Virtual Watson Live Stream”.

Prior to R+F Heidi was the Chief Executive Officer of Micro Analytical Systems and has over 25 years of leadership experience at globally recognized companies such as PepsiCo, E&J Gallo Winery, and RJR Nabisco.

She is a graduate of the University of Portland and holds executive certificates in Finance from the University of Chicago and Board Readiness from Yale University School of Management.

Susie Coelho (Chair of the Advisory Board)

Susie Coelho is an award-winning television personality, best-selling author, entrepreneur, and documentary filmmaker. One of the first Indian American actresses to break through in the US entertainment industry, she has received many honors for her contributions, including the prestigious Women of Vision Award in 2007 from the Women in Film organization.

Founding her own lifestyle company, Susie Coelho Enterprises, in 1997, Susie developed her nationally recognized Susie Coelho brand with her television shows, books, consumer products, and corporate partnerships which included companies such as Bank of America, SC Johnson, General Mills, Maxwell House, 3M, eBay, Visa, QVC, Grandin Road, Target and Mervyns.

Susie began her career as a Ford model in New York and later as an actress in Los Angeles. She was chosen by HBO Entertainment News to host their most prestigious celebrity events including the Academy Awards, Grammy’s, and Emmy’s’. Later Susie became the host of HGTV’s first home makeover series, “Surprise Gardener”. Her second HGTV series, “Outer Spaces” followed, and both were prime time hits for over 10 years. She went on to become a regular contributor on the Today Show, Oprah, and Fox Business.

As an author, Susie has published four lifestyle books and is currently working on her fifth book about her trip to India in 1983 to interview the famous Phoolan Devi in prison; she is also an executive producer on a documentary in production about the life of this notorious “Bandit Queen of India”.  Before her television career, Susie co-founded popular restaurants in Los Angeles and Houston, and created the hit celebrity clothing retailer, “A Star is Worn”, on trendy Melrose Avenue in Hollywood.

Colonel Jack Jacobs (Board Secretary)

Colonel Jack Jacobs served in the U.S. military for more than 20 years and is considered a true American hero. Colonel Jacobs is among the most highly decorated soldiers in our Nation’s history, having earned the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest combat honor, two Silver Stars, and three Bronze Stars. After leaving the military in 1987, Colonel Jacobs had a successful career in the financial industry; he currently is the on-air military strategist for NBC and MSNBC News Divisions. Jacobs was nominated for Emmys in 2010 and 2011 and was the recipient of the distinguished Edward R. Murrow Award for his NBC segment “Iraq: The Long Way Out.”

Colonel Jacobs is an author of two non-fiction books and has producing credits for the show “Ten Weeks”.  He is a major supporter of veterans interested in education that leads to careers in the film media and entertainment industries. Colonel Jacobs is the Chair of the Veteran Advancement Program at the New York Film Academy (NYFA) and teaches at Rutgers University and West Point Academy.

Jack McColgan (Board Treasurer)

Jack McColgan has been selected to serve on our Board of Trustees due to his experience in the performing arts as well as his business acumen and expertise in the world of finance.

Jack has over thirty years of experience in investment banking and investment management. He is the President of Prospect Hill Management, LLC, an investment advisory firm serving the investment needs of ultra high net worth investors. Prior to the formation of Prospect Hill, Jack worked in various capacities at Salomon Brothers and Blackhill Capital, Inc. Jack studied performance of the French Horn at the Juilliard School and Economics at Skidmore College.

ADVISORY BOARD

Tony Harris

Tony Harris is an Emmy Award winning journalist and filmmaker. He is currently the host of History Channel’s The Proof is Out There, an exploration of the many sightings of UFOs and the public’s fascination with Unidentified Aerial Phenomena.

Tony has hosted and served as executive producer for several shows and series for Discovery Communication’s ID Channel, including The Murder of George Floyd, Scene of the Crime with Tony Harris and ID’s limited series “Hate In America”. He hosted and reported “Behind Closed Door”, an exploration of domestic violence in America and also narrated the 2014 Discovery Channel documentary “9/11 Rescue Cops.”

For six years, Tony anchored CNN Newsroom w/Tony Harris where he earned George Foster Peabody Awards for coverage of the British petroleum oil spill and Hurricane Katrina. He also earned an Alfred I. duPont Award for coverage of the Southeast Asia tsunami. In a diverse broadcast career, Tony has served as an international news anchor for Al Jazeera English in Doha, Qatar during the 2011 Arab Spring and as New York-based correspondent for Entertainment Tonight.

Shkh. Al-Zain Al-Sabah

Her Excellency Shkh. Al-Zain S. Al-Sabah is the Ambassador of the Government of Kuwait to the United States. Formerly, Al-Zain held the position of Chairperson and CEO of National Creative Industries Group (NCIG) KSCC, a Kuwait-based organization that aids in the facilitation, incubation, and expansion of the creative arts and TMT-based industries in the MENA region.

Formerly the Undersecretary of the Kuwaiti Ministry of State for Youth Affairs, Al-Zain oversaw the creation of a number of regional youth initiatives, as well as the drafting of the country’s first National Youth Policy.

A pioneering film/TV producer, and social entrepreneur, Al-Zain has made it her mission to provide a creative haven for talented regional youths and help spread messages of peace and reconciliation in all her undertakings. Some of her award-winning co-productions include “Journey to Mecca” and “Amreeka”. A vocal proponent for new sector and job creation, Al-Zain serves on the board of a number of media and youth-charged organizations, including UNDP’s Development Advisory Board and Boston University’s COM board.

Prior to her work in the public sector, Al-Zain served as Chairperson and Managing Director of EVMG. Prior to that, she produced a number of TV news shows and worked for ABC News’ World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, in New York City. A MELI fellow at the Aspen Institute, Al-Zain earned an M.F.A. from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts and a B.S. in Journalism from Boston University.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a journalist and filmmaker most widely known for her Academy Award-winning documentary shorts: SAVING FACE and GIRL IN THE RIVER: THE PRICE OF FORGIVENESS. Obaid-Chinoy has dedicated her filmmaking career to shining a light on some of the most complex sociopolitical issues around the globe and has established herself a reputation for spotlighting the untold stories of women subject to injustice. Obaid-Chinoy’s Oscar win for GIRL IN THE RIVER: THE PRICE OF FORGIVENESS earned her a monumental visit with the Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2016, which ultimately impacted legislation and helped push through the long-stalled honor killing bill, the controversial law subject of her short.

Last spring, Obaid-Chinoy infused her signature style and verisimilitude she brings to her nonfiction projects to her narrative directorial debut for Marvel’s critically acclaimed series, MS.MARVEL. The series chronicled the MCU’s first Muslim character, Pakistani-American teenager, Kamala Khan, who acquires superpowers similar to that of her hero, Captain Marvel, and must navigate conflicts not only amongst supervillains in Jersey City, but at home and in high school. As a Pakistani- Canadian herself, Obaid-Chinoy brought great authenticity to MS. MARVEL’s story of Kamala Khan. Obaid-Chinoy directed two of the series’ most pivotal episodes (4 and 5) in which she set a visually-rich and emotionally-urgent style and tone. The New York Times included her episodes in its annual “Best Episodes of TV” list in 2022 calling them, “ingenious and surprisingly moving.”

More recently, it was announced that Obaid-Chinoy will direct a STAR WARS feature starring Daisy Ridley. She will be the first woman and person of color to direct a STARS WARS movie. She will also direct Paramount’s BRILLIANCE, based on the Marcus Sakey novel of the same name.

Obaid-Chinoy is also the recipient of Four Emmy Awards, a Knight International Journalism Award, the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the second highest civilian award of Pakistan, and was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. Obaid-Chinoy is the first filmmaker from Pakistan to ever win an Oscar and the first female film director to have won two Oscars by the age of 37.

Jim Miller

After 16 successful years as an international entrepreneur as both an owner and CEO in the wholesale fashion and home furnishings sectors, as well as a stakeholder in two NYC retail establishments, in 1998 Jim Miller transitioned to a career in higher education in the visual and performing arts. Due to his vast experience in the non-profit/NGO sectors, Miller was recently appointed as the Interim Executive Director of the 10 ARTS Foundation.

Non-Profit Activities

  • More than 20 years ago, Miller established the Medhen Orphan Relief Effort (M.O.R.E.), a 501c3 organization that supports a constantly evolving array of empowering and essential services to thousands of impoverished, orphaned, vulnerable, and underserved children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He is the organization’s past president and current trustee.
  • He is a founding Trustee of Artistic Freedom Initiative (AFI)
  • He serves on the Boards of Endicott College and the Totts Gap Arts Institute.
  • He was a founding trustee of the SACI Onlus and the Board of the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA).
  • For IIE, Miller was on the Advisory Board of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP).

Miller is now at the New York Film Academy College of Visual & Performing Arts (NYFA) as the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives. Miller leads and supervises the Fulbright Program and other USG and international government grants & cooperative agreements, global scholarship programs, NYFA’s Division of Veteran Services, Division of Educational Agency Services, NYFA Study Abroad & Study Away, and many other special projects. He continues to lead training programs in cooperation with U.S. Embassies around the globe, in recent years with Embassies and Consulates in Russia, Kazakhstan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Cuba, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Yemen, Nigeria, and South Africa. Miller managed distinctive programs and proposals with partners including NETFLIX, Freedom House, MultiChoice Foundation, International American Development Bank (IADP), United Nations, UNESCO, European Commission, USAID, NCIG, OSF, and more. In his various careers, Miller has overseen more than USD $125m in international-funded projects and programs in the fields of Higher Education, Human Rights, and Humanitarian Aid and Relief. He was essential in forming public and private partnerships which included the US Department of State, US Department of Defense, US Congress, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Andrew Mellon Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Richard Lounsbery Foundation, Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundation, and hundreds of private donors.

During his time at the Institute of International Education (IIE), he served in various executive leadership capacities. For the majority of his time at IIE, he was the Executive Director of the Scholar Rescue Fund, which has saved the lives and careers of over 900 threatened and persecuted scholars from more than 60 countries. He was the main architect of numerous innovative programs including the Iraq Scholar Rescue Project, Syria Scholar Rescue Project, a special Iran initiative, Iraq Distance e-Learning Education program, MENA Higher Education Capacity Building and Training Program, Camps to Campuses’, an initiative that provides higher education for Syrian students in refugee camps in Jordan, and the Women’s International Network (WIN) in partnership with Rutgers University. With support from the Rockefeller Foundation, he led a historic conference in Bellagio (Italy) — wherein stakeholders in the field of academic emergency and rescue, including front-line organizations, historiographers, funders, and exiled scholars — examined the past, present, and future of the knowledge domain. He also led IIE in establishing the Artists Protection Fund (APF), a program that is supported by the Andrew Mellon Foundation to aid at-risk artists.

Miller served as the Senior Executive for Studio Arts College International (SACI),a 501c3 studio art, archeological, and design college in Florence, Italy. During his tenure at SACI, he oversaw the school’s governance (board), finances, recruitment, admissions, US operations, fundraising, marketing, and was instrumental in establishing the Artists Advisory Council, as well as a consortium of American University-sponsored study abroad programs.

Miller has presented at higher education conferences around the world and has authored numerous articles, including in peer reviewed journals. Recently, he has been a producer of two documentary films.

Miller has lived and studied in Italy, and at the age of 18, was the Associate Director of a study abroad program called ‘Paint, Etch & Swim” in Sardinia, Italy. He was awarded the first ever Anna K. Meredith Study Abroad Scholarship from SACI. After graduating from university, for a time Miller was a master printer with a studio in Italy and pulled editions for artists including Giuliano Ghelli and the estate of Giorgio Morandi, and later at the NYC Robert Blackburn Studios for premiere artists such as Romare Bearden. He exhibited his own artwork in Europe and the U.S.

Miller is an alumnus of Pratt Institute and has attended educational programs and completed accredited courses at Denver University, Parsons/The New School, Drake University, Santa Reparata International School of Art, Art Students League, and The Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia. He graduated with honors from Northfield Mt. Hermon (NMH).

Hannah Gilliland

Since 2016, Hannah has been at the New York Film Academy (NYFA) as the Study Abroad Admissions Associate. In her role she handles recruitment and admissions for U.S. college and university students to ‘study abroad’ at NYFA’s international programs as well as ‘study away’ at NYFA’s domestic campuses. In addition, she assists in managing NYFA’s Study Abroad Department’s 3rd party provider and university partnerships.

Prior to NYFA, Hannah worked as an Employer Relations Specialist at InterExchange. While in high school and college, she studied abroad in Turkey, Israel, South Africa, Sweden, and Japan which shaped her passion for international travel and student and scholar exchange and her desire to provide others these experiences as well. Hannah graduated from Pitzer College with a BA in both International Intercultural Studies and the Classics.

Fundraising Associate

Studying Media and Communications at Cardiff University, Valerie has developed skills to combine her passion for music and entertainment within the industry. She has prior experience as a Music Industry Creation Resource Intern at Anthem, planning and executing content. Valerie excels at building an engaged community on social media platforms and collaborating with music industry professionals to craft strong performances. Additionally, Valerie worked as a Talent Management Intern at Rybin Studios, where she maximized potential bookings for companies such as Netflix, Nickelodeon, and NBC. With a diverse background in social media marketing, event management, and customer service, Valerie promotes effective communication, creativity, and organizational skills to every project.

After graduating from university, for a time Miller was a master printer with a studio in Italy and pulled editions for artists including Giuliano Ghelli and the estate of Giorgio Morandi, and later at the NYC Robert Blackburn Studios for premiere artists such as Romare Bearden. He exhibited his own artwork in Europe and the U.S.

Miller is an alumnus of Pratt Institute and has attended educational programs and completed accredited courses at Denver University, Parsons/The New School, Drake University, Santa Reparata International School of Art, Art Students League, and The Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia. He graduated with honors from Northfield Mt. Hermon (NMH).

Hannah Gilliland

Since 2016, Hannah has been at the New York Film Academy (NYFA) as the Study Abroad Admissions Associate. In her role she handles recruitment and admissions for U.S. college and university students to ‘study abroad’ at NYFA’s international programs as well as ‘study away’ at NYFA’s domestic campuses. In addition, she assists in managing NYFA’s Study Abroad Department’s 3rd party provider and university partnerships.

Prior to NYFA, Hannah worked as an Employer Relations Specialist at InterExchange. While in high school and college, she studied abroad in Turkey, Israel, South Africa, Sweden, and Japan which shaped her passion for international travel and student and scholar exchange and her desire to provide others these experiences as well. Hannah graduated from Pitzer College with a BA in both International Intercultural Studies and the Classics.

Studying Media and Communications at Cardiff University, Valerie has developed skills to combine her passion for music and entertainment within the industry. She has prior experience as a Music Industry Creation Resource Intern at Anthem, planning and executing content. Valerie excels at building an engaged community on social media platforms and collaborating with music industry professionals to craft strong performances. Additionally, Valerie worked as a Talent Management Intern at Rybin Studios, where she maximized potential bookings for companies such as Netflix, Nickelodeon, and NBC. With a diverse background in social media marketing, event management, and customer service, Valerie promotes effective communication, creativity, and organizational skills to every project.
